Conservative leadership hopeful Rishi Sunak paid a visit to North West Leicestershire last weekend to speak with party members due to be casting votes in the ongoing leadership election.

Mr Sunak visited the Man in Compass public house on Loughborough Road, Whitwick as the campaign, which will determine Britain's next Prime Minister, draws to a close.

He spoke with members from across Leicestershire as well as answering questions on topics as varied as the war in Ukraine, school standards and the ongoing energy crisis.

North West Leicestershire MP Andrew Bridgen was also at the venue to greet Mr Sunak on his visit to the district.

Organising the event Leon Spence, North West Leicestershire's Conservative Association Chairman said: "It was great to welcome Rishi to Whitwick, to talk with him about our growing economy, our desirability as a place to live and of course the beautiful National Forest countryside that surrounds us.

"Rishi has been very clear that his priority will be in supporting areas like ours, and particularly the pockets of deprivation that we do have.

"Having lived in the political world for some time it's very clear that Rishi is one of the cleverest top-flight politicians I've ever encountered.

"I've no doubt he would make an impressive Prime Minister."

Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak have been going head to head in the battle to see who will become Prime Minister.

The decision will be announced next Monday - but the suggestion is so far that Ms Truss will win.
