A former garage at the edge of Shepshed town centre has been earmarked for a block of seven flats.

The site had previously been put up for auction after the garage closed down.

The new homes, which have been submitted before Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) by PKM Properties No. 3 Ltd, looks to erect the block of flats on land at 8 Britannia Street.

The site is said to have been home to a "garage with workshops", with the garage having closed down in July 2023.

The application also asks for "part-retrospective" permission to demolish a number of structures on the site. Although the planning documents refer to some "derelict structures", there are no details on what buildings are currently on-site or why the application is "part retrospective".

The plot of land was put up for auction for a guide price of between £280,000 to £300,000 last June. At the time, the listing claimed the site had been "mostly cleared" by the point it was entered on auction listings.

If approved by CBC, the flats will have one bedroom each, with a shared garden space, and off-road parking at the rear of the building. Planning documents said: "Its prominent position to the front of Britannia Street means that the overall character of the area appears neglected and in need of revival."

The documents claim the proposals will "enhance" the area, and that the flats will be "sympathetic" to existing properties on the street, which include terraced housing, detached homes, and a number of businesses. The application documents can be viewed on CBC's planning portal, and comments and objections can be made until Tuesday, April 29.
