North West Leicestershire District Council has opened more public parks and local spaces the Coalville area - but reminded people that social distancing measures must still be followed.

Residents in North West Leicestershire are being urged to enjoy them safely after coronavirus restrictions were reviewed this week.

But the public are also encouraged to show common sense and not burden the NHS further by risking contracting Coronavirus.

Following the Government's announcements in recent days North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) has taken the following actions:

  • Re-opened car parks associated with open space provision such as the car park at Coalville Park
  • Re-opened Hermitage Recreation Ground fishing lake
  • Re-opened Coalville Park tennis courts, skate park and multi-use games area (MUGA)

All playgrounds, outdoor gym equipment and public toilets will remain closed in line with Government guidance.

Last Saturday, one council official tweeted his 'disappointment' that social distancing measures were not being observed in Coalville Park and hinted it could be closed again if it such gatherings continued Coalville Park may have to be closed again

But then the Government said more parks could be accessed and Bradgate Park was open again on Wednesday.

NWLDC says that everyone visiting parks and open spaces must follow the Government's two metre social distancing guidance and only attend with members of their own household.

An individual can now also choose to meet one person from another household as long as social distancing measures are strictly followed.

Councillor Andrew Woodman, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: "We're trusting residents in North West Leicestershire to use our parks and spaces safely while sticking to the social distancing guidance and therefore continuing to save lives and protect the NHS.

"Mental and physical wellbeing is of huge importance during this pandemic and we have faith that people will use these spaces sensibly while also enjoying them.

"We will continue to monitor and review the situation at our parks and as ever the health and safety of both the public and our staff will continue to be our number one priority."
