Coalville Park has been threatened with closure again - because people are 'blatantly disregarding' social distancing rules.

Jason Knight, the leisure services manager at North West Leicestershire District Council, sent out a tweet on Saturday after being alarmed at the activity happening at the park despite the coronavirus lockdown.

He posted: "So disappointed that people are blatantly disregarding the social distancing rules in Coalville Park.

"Social gatherings, picnics, drinking, etc.

"Please, please get the message out that if it continues we may have to consider closing the park again to ensure public safety."

Another tweet reads: "Please get the message out so the small minority don't spoil it for the majority of users."

The park has only just been re-opened by the council and the move was welcomed by the Friends of Coalville Park last month Friends of Coalville Park welcome re-opening

But at the time, North West Leicestershire District Council chief executive Bev Smith announced on social media: "We are opening Coalville park.

"We rely on people's responsible actions and adherence to Government guidance on social distancing. Enjoy as part of your daily exercise!"

But there are now serious concerns that the public are not sticking to Government guidelines during lockdown - particularly in the warm weather over the Bank Holiday weekend.

North West Leicestershire MP Andrew Bridgen re-tweeted Mr Knight's post and it is clear that the council is worried that the actions of the public may mean the Park cannot be kept open for now.
