Coalville Angler Ed Makes Biggest Ever Catch - And Names The Fish After His Daughter

By Graham Hill 14th May 2020

A Coalville angler caught a 21lbs Carp and named it after his daughter.

Ed Downing, of Ashby Angling Club, landed the fish at Wiggs Farm, near Ellistown.

And as it was newly-stocked, and the first time it had been caught at that water, Ed could name it and he called it after 10-year-old daughter Isy who was with him at the time.

The fish was caught on the Sunday evening before the Coronavirus lockdown closed the sport in this country for almost two months.

Those restrictions were lifted on Wednesday allowing Ashby AC's anglers to return.

But Ed's Carp catch - his biggest ever - earned him and Isy a place on the front cover of Angling Times.

He explained: "My daughter helped me catch it, and it's the biggest fish I've caught, I've been angling since I was a kid.

"Isy's been down there with me a few times but we've only caught little things compared to that.

"When they stock specimen fish like that, if you catch it first then you get to name it.

"Isy was very happy I named it after her.

"I knew it was a decent size as it was pulling me all over the place.

"I wasn't expecting to get on the front cover of the Angling Times, I knew it was going in but not a big as that!"

But Ed admitted it was great publicity for the club.

Ed, 29, is a head bailiff at Ashby AC which means he has had to make sure no-one has been fishing on club waters when they should not be.

He added: "You have to make sure there are no dead fish and if people are there, you have to make sure they have tickets and membership. Otherwise they shouldn't be there.

"But we're allowed back now and I think a few people were down there fishing on Wednesday.

"It's been rubbish not been able to fish but at the same time it hasn't been wasted time, we've been doing a lot of maintenance."
