A man was arrested in the Coalville area this morning (Monday) for punching a police officer in the face then threatening to spit at his colleagues.

The incident happened in the early hours and Leicestershire Police have so far not given details of the exact location.

But the officers were responding to a report of an assault.

And it was when the victim of that incident was being treated that the attack on the police officer happened.

A tweet from Leicestershire Police 24/7 Response reads: "Early hours of this morning, officers respond to report of an assault in the Coalville Police area.

"When treating the victim, he decides to punch one of my officers in the face and then threatens to spit at officers.

"Needless to say he has been arrested. #protecttheprotectors."
