Organisers of the Heather Scarecrow Festival have issued a warning after a child reportedly 'kicked and stamped' on one of the displays.

The annual festival sees some Heather residents build their own scarecrows and put them at the front of their properties for visitors to see.

It attracts thousands of people to the village for the week-long event near Coalville.

But a social media post today (Tuesday) asks children to behave - and not touch the scarecrows.

The organisers' message reads: "Please DO NOT let your children touch, climb or damage scarecrows.

"Please assume that, unless invited to do so, you should not step on to residents' properties.

"Scarecrows should be viewed from the footpath.

"It has been brought to our attention by numerous residents that their scarecrow has been damaged by children entering gardens and touching displays.

"One person witnessed a child kick and stamp on their scarecrow.

"This is clearly not acceptable and very disappointing for residents who have spent money and many hours creating their displays for everyone to enjoy.

"The scarecrow displays will not last the week if children continue to behave in this way, please do not let this happen."
