Police in Coalville helped to break up a 'car cruise' that eventually numbered up to 400 vehicles on Saturday night.

Five drivers were either warned or reported for a mix of speeding, anti-social driving and obstruction of the highway.

Leicestershire Police have confirmed the Coalville area was included as part of the convoy's route.

A tweet from North West Leicestershire Police reads: "Thank you to all last night for assisting NWLeics Police officers with disrupting the force wide car cruise."

The Leicestershire Roads Policing Unit also posted: "Great joint effort overnight. Car cruise disrupted and offenders reported."

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said this morning (Monday): "Police received a report of a large number of cars gathering in the Leicestershire area at around 8.30pm on Saturday (24 April).

"The group made their way through several locations across the force area and at one point, an estimated 400 cars were reported in convoy on the A46 near to Thrussington.

"Given the disruption this could cause, a message was issued via social media to warn other motorists of possible delays.

"Officers monitored the situation and three people were issued with Section 59 warnings – a warning about the use of a vehicle anti-socially – as well two drivers being reported for speeding and wilful obstruction of the highway.

"The group left the force area shortly after 11pm."
