Coalville MP Andrew Bridgen has highlighted North West Leicestershire District Council's 2,000 home 'Recycle More…' plan in the House of Commons.

Mr Bridgen made the scheme known to Luke Hall, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Local Government and Homelessness.

In a question to Mr Hall, the MP for North West Leicestershire said: "North West Leicestershire District

Council is running a 2,000-home trial of food waste separation, and more than 25 tonnes of food waste has been diverted from landfill since mid-December as a result.

"Given that a third of black-bin waste is food or food related, will the Minister confirm that councils across the country will get financial support to enable them to roll out food waste separation to all homes?"

The Minister replied: "I commend North West Leicestershire District Council on its work and note its recent "Recycle more…" plan.

"We recognise the importance of diverting food waste from landfill and will mandate weekly food waste collections in England through the Environment Bill, with DEFRA having committed to fully funding local authorities to do that in line with the new burdens doctrine."
