Coalville councillor Craig Smith has provided an update on the A511 Growth Corridor - which has been delayed once again.

Leicestershire County Council said last year that construction was planned to commence in Spring 2025 - after being scheduled for 2024 - with completion expected towards the end of 2027.

But a social media post from Cllr Smith says work is now not expected to begin until 'early 2026'.

The Coalville North county councillor said: "As with all major projects, this scheme is complex, and some elements take longer to complete.

"This includes new findings from surveys, landowner negotiations, and close work with key partners like Network Rail. Highways has been addressing these challenges to keep the project on track.

"A significant portion of this scheme will be funded by the national Major Road Network fund. While last year's change in Government brought some uncertainty, Leicestershire County Council is pleased to confirm that this funding is still available. The council remains fully committed to delivering the proposed improvements.

"Construction is anticipated to begin in early 2026. While this represents a delay from the original timeline, the extra planning now will help reduce delays and disruption during the construction phase."

Cllr Smith says the council wants the 'best value for money' and a contract is expected to be awarded within a few months.

He added: "With local authority funding under pressure, it's vital to proceed in the most cost-effective way.

"That's why it's taken extra time to carefully plan how to procure a contractor to get the best value for money. The tendering process is already underway, and the Council expects to award the contract this spring.

"Once a contractor is on board, Highways spends around six to nine months working together to coordinate construction activities to minimise disruption to road users; and leverage practical construction expertise to identify design efficiencies and potential time savings.

"Thank you for your understanding and patience as LCC carefully plans and delivers this transformative project."

North West Leicestershire MP Amanda Hack said last summer that the project had been mentioned in a new report identifying priority road projects

She says it is part of a wider plan for investment across the Midlands which could 'significantly impact the lives of people living and working' across the region.
