North West Leicestershire District Council's 'deep clean' of Coalville town centre has been described as making the area worse, not better - with 'mud and debris' left on shop fronts.

District councillor and local businessman Michael Wyatt claims the operation left many businesses in the area to clean up the mess left by the contractors.

The clean-up was designed to smarten the town centre up as it emerged from lockdown.

Last week, North West Leicestershire District Council posted on social media to make a point of what good work had been done, saying: "Our street cleaning contractor, Brooklands Group, has done a great job at deep cleaning the streets of Coalville."

But Lib-Dem Cllr Wyatt disputes that and alleges that shop windows and doors were left with mud over them which angered many local traders

He added: "I was absolutely disgusted the way the contractors left our High Street.

"Over a dozen local shops were left with mud and debris all over their windows and doors.

"Even when we complained all they did was send two lads with a dry cloth which left a bigger mess.

"The contractors need sacking and the council needs to withhold paying them taxpayers' money which was supposed to help improve the area not make it worse than it was."
