A Coalville community figure has called for people to 'rise above' the riots and attacks seen across the UK in wake of the Southport tragedy.

It was just over a week ago that three girls were killed in a stabbing that shocked the nation.

But since then, a number of cities have seen rioting and disturbances.

Now, Kirat Sandhu says it is time for communities to come together after what has happened.

He says: "Southport was struck by an unspeakable tragedy, as the lives of innocent children were cruelly taken and others left fighting for their lives in a senseless knife attack.

"The entire community, and indeed the nation, is in absolute shock and heartache of this horrific event. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by this senseless act of violence.

"As we grapple with the sadness and frustration, it is essential to remember that while our emotions are valid, the path we choose in response defines us as a society.

"The pain and frustration felt by not only the people of Southport but the entire nation are understandable. In times of such grief, it is natural to feel a wave of sorrow, anger and frustration.

"However, it is crucial to channel these emotions in ways that foster healing and unity, rather than further division and destruction.

"In the wake of the tragedy, there have been riots and attacks on individuals based on their skin colour and attacks on places of worship.

"While the anger and despair are understandable, it is essential to remember that responding with violence and prejudice only perpetuates a cycle of hatred.

"Attacking innocent people based on their ethnicity not only undermines the core values of our society but also detracts from the need for genuine justice and healing.

"The United Kingdom has always prided itself on its diversity and unity.

"Our strength lies in our ability to come together, support one another, and rise above these shameful acts. In these trying times, let us remember the values that bind us as a community – compassion, understanding, and solidarity.

"Let us honour the memory of Bebe, Alice and Elsie. By coming together, we can ensure that their legacy is one of peace and unity, not division and violence."
