Vandals have smashed the Christmas lights on the tree in Coaville town centre.

The tree, in Memorial Square, was attacked in what has been described as an act of 'extreme vandalism'.

And now North West Leicestershire Distrcit Council officials are hoping to find out who was responsible by examining CCTV footage.

A message posted by the council also says the 'disappointing' incident is the second such incident of vandalism over the past week.

The council says: "Due to extreme vandalism, the lights on the tree at Memorial Square have been broken and are no longer working.

"The team is looking at repairs although the damage to both the lights and the sockets might be too extensive to salvage.

"This is really disappointing as this is the second incident of reckless vandalism in the last seven days.

"We take matters of vandalism extremely seriously and are looking at CCTV so that we can report this to the police.

"If anyone has any information about this incident, please get in touch."
