Coalville CAN community group has set out its forthcoming activities for the new year.

The group says the general focus of its activities is that they should be fun, inclusive and be accessible and affordable and led by people in the community.

Coalville CAN explains the main purpose of the activities can be outlined to do the following:

  • Reduce violence and antisocial behaviour
  • Reduce discrimination
  • Provide a space that is emotionally supportive, nourishing
  • Promote healthy physical development
  • Be inclusive for all abilities
  • Reduce discrimination and any margins that people face
  • Be open to everyone and anyone
  • Be accessible, affordable and spread throughout LE67 and the wider area
The current projects include: Parkour - At Hermitage Leisure Centre on Wednesday. The group has teamed up with Jump (a national parkour organisation), Everyone Active, and North West Leicestershire District Council to bring parkour to Coalville. The sessions improve physical wellbeing, teach discipline and provide a popular alternative form of exercise. They are £7.50 per session and there are two classes. The first session is for 7-11 year olds at 6:30pm to 7:30pm. These sessions bring together individuals from a wide range of diverse backgrounds. Funding has also been secured to train young Parkour Coaches and organisers are keen to find people that want to do this. Games and Multisports: These sessions are run at three different locations:
  • Marlene Reid Centre - Tuesdays 4:15 - 5:15pm
  • Hermitage Leisure Centre - Wednesdays at 5:30pm - 6:30pm
  • Agar Nook Community Centre - Thursdays at 5pm - 6pm
These are all £2.50 each and are being run by local older young people. The sessions provide a fun physical outlet for a variety of ages that also gives the chance for improving socialisation. The sessions have proven highly popular and moved from strength to strength, starting off in one location and branching out to three within two months. Street Art Workshops: Every Thursday (ages) 9 – 12 at 5:30 – 6:30 (ages) 13+ at 7 – 8pm. These are fun interactive sessions that give the chance for children to learn the history behind the art form, competitions that give the chance for all to win and take home. There are many opportunities to take part in murals. The aim of the sessions is to boost confidence, morale and express their artistic side using street art tools such as posca pens, spray cans and canvases. February Half Term Activities - In conjunction with North West Leicestershire District Council and Hugglescote and Donington le Heath Parish Council Parish Council, Coalville CAN is are putting on multi-sport fun and games activity sessions in the February Half Term. These are Tuesday 15th February 11-1pm and Wednesday 16th February 2-4pm. These will be run at Hugglescote community centre for those Ages 7-11. All abilities are welcome, these will give the chance for those in the ages mentioned to take part in a wide range of activities. Coalville Mega Walk: Every third Sunday of the month we carry out a community walk from 1pm. The walks venture throughout Coalville exploring its history, nature and heritage. Anyone of all ages is welcome, including pets. Coalville CAN says it is trying to do great things with the community, for the community.
