Police were checking that Mantle Lane Bridge in Coalville is safe after a lorry crashed into it on Wednesday afternoon.

Thornborough Road has been closed and Police are advising both drivers and pedestrians to find an alternative route.

North West Leicestershire Police posted an update on their Facebook page which read: "Until there is confirmation that the Bridge is safe the footpath has now been closed until the bridge has been confirmed sound.

"Please find alternative route home if travelling on foot or by road."

A lorry became stuck under the bridge just after 1.30pm but it is not thought anyone was injured.

Traffic has been diverted from the area.
