A number of organisations from the Coalville area have been funded by North West Leicestershire District Council ahead of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Over 40 events have been planned thanks to cash boosts from a special Platinum Jubilee grant scheme.

Street parties, fetes and afternoon teas will be taking place across the district to celebrate the Queen's 70 years of service with help from the district council.

In total, £11,619 in grants have been awarded to 48 applicants to help the likes of parish councils, schools and community groups commemorate the Queen becoming the first British monarch to celebrate 70 years on the throne.

Successful groups include Hugglescote Primary School, Worthington Parish Council, Ellistown and Battleflat Events and Engagement Group, Whitwick Royal British Legion and Falcon Support Services.

Grants of up to £250 were used towards entertainment, bunting, decorations, picnics, planters and plaques to mark the celebrations over the four-day bank holiday.

As well as the community events, and as part of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Beacons, residents are welcome to attend a Beacon Lighting Ceremony at Breedon Priory Church on Thursday 2 June from 8pm.

Free events, activities and live entertainment will also take place at Coalville Park on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 June and at Newmarket on Saturday 4 June.

Councillor Andrew Woodman, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: "We've received a great response from groups who have been incredibly creative in coming up with ideas and celebrations to commemorate this unique milestone.

"It makes us proud to be able to support an amazing range of events across the district and help to bring the community together.

"I'm really looking forward to joining in on the celebrations and seeing residents support their local communities."
