Green-fingered Coalville schoolchildren plant a commemorative tree to honour the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee
Six children from three primary schools in Coalville helped to plant a royal tree as part of The Queen's Green Canopy (QGC), a country-wide initiative to mark Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee.
North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) oversaw the project by providing the Royal Burgundy, a species of cherry tree, to be planted with a commemorative plaque at Coalville Park.
Belvoirdale Community Primary School, St Clare's Primary School and All Saints Church of England Primary School were each invited to bring along two children to 'Plant a Tree for the Jubilee.'
The council's Parks Team prepared the foundations and invited the pupils to complete the planting by filling in the soil around the base alongside newly appointed Chairman, Councillor Russell Boam.
The tree is located on the field behind the play area at Coalville Park and will be recorded on the Queen's Green Canopy map.
Cllr Russell Boam, Chairman of NWLDC, said: "It was great to be joined by pupils from Coalville to plant a tree as part of the Queen's Green Canopy initiative.
"This project is a great way to commemorate the Queen's service for the last 70 years and give the community something to remember the special event by.
"I'd like to thank the children for coming along and look forward to seeing the tree flourish in years to come."
