Leicestershire Police have confirmed they have been contacted about an 'inappropriate effigy' on a bonfire at a premises in Whitwick.

The incident is believed to have happened at Whitwick Constitutional Club in Silver Street last week.

After the bonfire night event, it was alleged that the effigy referred to by police depicted the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, as a Guy Fawkes 'guy'.

In a now deleted social media post, the club apologised for any upset caused by the incident during the event on November 1.

However, it was reported to the police the next day.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: "A report was received by the force on November 2, following an incident of an inappropriate effigy being put on a bonfire in a premises in Silver Street, Whitwick.

"We are aware of the report and it has been logged on police systems."

The social media post appeared on The Constitutional Club's Facebook page - but has now been removed.

It said: "It has come to our attention that some people may have been offended by our guy on the bonfire, Friday November 1.

"We apologise for any upset that may have been caused.

"This was only done in the tradition of Bonfire Night and Guy Fawkes."

Coalville Nub News has contacted The Constitutional Club for further comment.
