A Coalville Co-op store manager praised the bravery of his team leader after an armed attack on the shop.

The Co-op in Cropston Drive, Greenhill, was open as usual just hours after the incident on Wednesday evening when the store came under attack from a gang using weapons were used to try and force their way into the store.

But it was open again the next day and manager Dan Cooper said his staff reacted well despite the seriousness of the situation.

"They were shook up at the time, but nobody was hurt and they're okay now, everything's good," said Dan.

"Our team leader Glynis dealt with it brilliantly, so I rewarded her with a bottle of wine and a day off so she could enjoy the sun on Thursday.

"We had the police in and have spoken to our security people. But we were open the next day and will be open during Easter as planned."

Staff held the door closed so as the attackers could not enter the premises.

Twelve police cars are thought to have attended the incident.

A Leicestershire Police statement read: "We were called to a report of public disorder at a premises in Cropston Drive in Coalville.

"A group of people were reported to be involved and in possession of weapons.

"Damage to a car and a window at the premises were caused during the incident but there were no injuries reported.

"The suspects left scene and police were carrying out inquiries and establishing the full circumstances of the incident."

Last May, the same store was ram-raided when its front shutters driven into.

But the attempt to take a cash machine from inside the shop was unsuccessful.

It was the second attack on a store in the Coalville area this week.
