Armed police descended on a Whitwick road on Tuesday - only to find it was a false alarm.

A number of officers - as well as a police helicopter - raced to Parsonwood Hill after reports that someone was carrying a firearm.

However, it was found that no weapons were discovered - but that the call was made by someone who genuinely felt there was a danger.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: "Police were called at 4.50pm on Tuesday afternoon to a report of a person in Parsonwood Hill, Whitwick, with what appeared to be a firearm.

"Officers attended the road, and as a precaution, for public and officer safety, so did firearms officers.

"The police helicopter was also deployed.

"Following enquiries by officers, it was deemed to be a call of good intent and not as reported."
