'Confusion, Blissfully Unaware And Disappointment' As Coalville's FA Trophy Tie With Matlock Is Suddenly Back ON

Coalville Town say they are confused and disappointed after being told their cancelled FA Trophy match with Matlock Town is ON again.

The game was to have taken place this Saturday but was called off due to some players and members of the management team testing positive for coronavirus FA Trophy tie is off.

Coalville assumed they had a bye into the next round as Matlock had forfeited the tie - only to find the match has now been re-arranged for November 3.

This was apparently done behind their backs and with no consultation between the FA, Matlock or Coalville who say they have been 'blissfully unaware' about any attempts to resurrect the game.

Coalville say they were informed by Matlock of the new date - which clashed with a home league game with Hitchin that now has to be re-arranged.

But Ravens officials contacted the FA to clarify the situation, they were told they had not even been told Matlock had forfeited, despite the Derbyshire club saying so on social media.

To add to the Coalville's frustration, they say that all social media posts saying Matlock had forfeited the tie have now been deleted.

Matlock were supposed to have been on an enforced break due to the

Covid-19 cases.

But Coalville officials say they were as surprised as anyone to find tie back on again.

A strongly-worded statement on The Ravens' website says: "In a largely confusing sequence of events we can now share the news that the originally postponed/cancelled/forfeited game against Matlock Town in the FA Trophy has been rescheduled to Tuesday, 3rd November.

"As with all FA competitions this season, we were under the impression that if a team couldn't play on the date planned then the other side would receive a bye into the next round as has happened so many times across the FA Cup and FA Trophy already over the past few months.

"Once again this isn't the way we want to win any football match, however we understood the rules to be just that and were then preparing and selling tickets for our league game against Hitchin Town on the 3rd.

"Since the news broke on Sunday evening we acted quickly, issuing over £1,000 worth of ticket refunds to Coalville and Matlock fans who had already purchased tickets for the game with Matlock fully knowing this and thanking us for our co-operation in acting so quickly to get money back into supporters pockets.

"We thought this matter was all closed until our secretary received an email from a Matlock director yesterday afternoon saying he had spoken to the FA and our game is now to be re-scheduled and played on Tuesday 3rd November.

"Quite confused, we then contacted the FA to ask if this was really the case to be surprised that the FA hadn't even received official notification from Matlock Town that they were forfeiting their place in the competition despite them announcing across all of their social media platforms and twitter that they were whilst also letting us refund tickets for the game.

"We are even more disappointed that these statements and tweets have now been deleted which means conversations have been going on in the background with us blissfully unaware.

"In a time where non-league volunteers are already working around the clock alongside full time jobs this has now caused even more work for everyone involved as we have had to cancel our league game against Hitchin Town and sort ticketing arrangements out for both games.

"All tickets purchased for the Hitchin game are still valid and will be assigned to that game once the new date is confirmed.

"The Matlock game has been re-added to Tuesday and you will have to re-purchase if you want to attend both, we can however transfer your Hitchin ticket onto the Matlock game if you don't want to do both.

"Apologies for all at Hitchin Town for any inconvenience caused.

"We also feel for any club who has had to forfeit their place in an FA competition and been told previously that they can't re-arrange the game.

"Whilst we fully appreciate health and safety is paramount and more important than football, we wanted to place on record our disappointment with how the whole thing has been handled."
