A Whitwick pub has been given the go-ahead to expand its dining facilities after being granted planning permission by North West Leicestershire District Council.

The Man Within Compass, in Loughborough Road - also known as the Rag and Mop - made an application to build a single storey side extension and make internal alterations.

Since then, the applicant, Mr Carl Foster, has submitted revised plans - and has this week received the green light to go ahead with the work.

Whitwick Parish Council raised no objection to the plans, but asked what environmental mitigation measures are being taken, as well as requesting a donation to help improve tree stock within the parish area.

A council officer's report says: "The application seeks to extend an existing commercial and community facility - creating a single storey extension to accommodate extra dining room space.

"The Local Plan supports the expansion or enhancement of community facilities to assist continuing viability, particularly in areas where new development will increase demand.

"The site is located within the urban area of Whitwick where the majority of growth will take place."

The report also addressed the need for new developments to fit in with the character of the National Forest.

It adds: "Development in the National Forest should be appropriate to its Forest setting, and expects any new development within the Charnwood Forest Regional Park to respect the character and appearance of area in terms of design and materials used.

"The application proposed a single storey extension to the east side of the existing public house. The character of the surrounding area is defined by a mix of building styles and ages.

"The application property is a detached building finished in stone with a gable roof design. The proposed extension in respect of its scale would be subservient to the existing public house.

"Amended plans have now been received which reflect the planning officer's recommendation and therefore the design of the development is considered to be acceptable and in character with the existing building."
