Saturday marks the official opening of the new Marlborough Square area in Coalville with a family fun day.

It was to have been on Friday, but the threat of high winds has forced North West Leicestershire District Council to cancel the first weekly outdoor market.

On Saturday, there is a family fun day with a range of entertainment to show what the new-look square can provide for the town.

Work to create new public space for markets and events in Coalville has been completed on the development officially began last September.

Council leader, Cllr Richard Blunt, admits the project has seen a 'loss of support' due to the amount of time taken to complete it - after it was first planned in 2018.

But now he says he wants the positives of the development to outweigh the negatives.

There will be a weekly on Fridays from 8am-4pm.

Featuring fruit and veg, fish and meat, flowers and artisan goods stalls, the first market will be a celebration, with family entertainment running alongside the regular stalls, including live music, a caricaturist, face painting and pirate-themed activities.

There is a fundraising quiz night at Coalville Town Rugby Club on Friday.
