The Century Theatre in Coalville is showing the film Vindication Swim on Friday night.

This is the inspirational true story of Mercedes Gleitze, who in 1927 became the first British woman to swim the English Channel.

The film depicts Mercedes' upstream struggle in overcoming both the cold waters of the English Channel and the oppressive society of 1920s England. However, after a rival comes forward claiming to have accomplished the same feat, Mercedes is forced into battle to retain her record and her legacy.

Stars Kirsten Callaghan, John Locke and Victoria Sumner with James Wilby and Douglas Hodge.

Back in Ibstock, the Central Bar and Venue has the monthly Ibstock Soul Club.

This is Leicestershire's biggest monthly Soul night.

This September we have two of our resident DJs Richard Reed and Sean Taylor with special guest DJ Martin Topley from Boston Gliderdrome playing the best in Northern Soul and Tamla Motown all on vinyl on the venue's superb surround sound system.

Fully air-conditioned room, super wooden sprung dance floor and drinks at sensible prices.

Also in Ibstock on Friday, the Palace Community Centre has the return of The Royal Flush, an exciting Rock 'n Roll and Rockabilly band from Switzerland.

The live set consists of many of their own songs and selected interpretations from Jay Swan to Buck Stevens.

Musical delicacies for spoilt connoisseurs are served fresh and friendly with a spicy marinade of playfulness, wit and cheeky riffs.

There is also a free Superhero Event for local youngsters on Saturday and Sunday.

There will be details and demonstrations of the 35+ groups that are offered by the u3a, plus an opportunity to join in a short session for some of the groups - take the opportunity to have a go at curling, canasta and more.

The group leaders will be happy to discuss what their group, and the Whitwick & District u3a, can offer you.
