Up and coming Coalville band The Mercians ready for major Leicester gig next month
Up and coming Coalville indie band, The Mercians, say they are proud to give the Midlands a voice in the music scene with the release of their debut single Dream Seller next month.
Despite an unsettling setback, the band have already had some success, from selling out their first live gig, to headlining at the Glastonbudget festival, and also being featured on BBC Radio Leicester.
Front man Matt Cominotto said: 'I think it's safe to say that we're probably the fastest growing, unsigned band in the Midlands right now."
The Mercians' story started 18 months ago when drummer Charlie Devonport, who has been playing since he was 12, wrote the band's first song 'Distant'.
The release of the demo caught the attention of a London manager who had previously managed indie rock band Rats..
However, after investing a considerable sum into the partnership, The Mercians fell out with their manager and broke the partnership.
Charlie said: 'The experience actually pushed us to write our debut single.
"At eight grand down you could say, 'let's just pack it in' because we're miles behind.
"But rather than that we decided to write a song about it and we've got a whole music video and promotional package around it."
Since forming a partnership with new manager Matt Pickers, the band, whose musical influences include Foals, Sam Fender and Catfish and the Bottlemen, have gone from strength to strength.
After supporting alternative London band, The Skinner brothers, The Mercians were offered a 450-capacity gig at the O2 Academy in Leicester on August 20
Matt said: 'We want to stay super humble, we're just enjoying it, but I think you have to realise sometimes that it's something special.'
The Mercians have announced their first support act for the event, Midlands artist Chloe Ann.
Charlie said: 'We're very proud of our midlands orientation, it's kind of our whole brand- bringing indie back to the Midlands.'
Matt added: "In the whole debate of who's music is better, the north or the south, we want to give the Midlands a voice.'
The band have also been filming their first music video in preparation for the release of Dream Seller and say that it has been one of the best highlights in their career so far.
Lead guitarist Owen Trotts added: "We had an eye-opening moment the other night, we were filming live at The Shed and the crowd were bouncing along straight away - I never realised how bouncy that song was until that moment.'
The band also have big plans for the future; following the release of the 'Dream Seller' the band will be releasing a social media promotion and then another new song every two months.
They have also been offered the opening spot on the main stage at Glastonbudget next year and say they are thrilled to be the first originals band to receive the offer.
The band are hoping to get signed to a record deal after the release of Dream Seller and aspire to play at Glastonbury in the future.
