A Thringstone-based lorry driver who crashed through a wall after nodding off at the wheel has been given a suspended prison sentence.

Nottinghamshire Police report that Lukasz Krasnik, 37, was on his way to deliver a load of gravel when he lost control of his tipper lorry in Percy Street, Basford, at about 10.25am on Thursday, November 2, last year.

He then collided with a lamppost and a bollard before smashing through a garden wall as he fought to regain control.

After crossing the pavement, his large tipper lorry eventually came to rest just a few feet from a residential property.

Fortunately, nobody was injured in the incident.

Krasnik told officers at the scene that he must have fallen asleep at the wheel, and that he had no known medical issues. He later pleaded guilty to a charge of dangerous driving.

Appearing at Nottingham Magistrates Court on Friday, May 31, he was given a 12-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months.

He was also banned from driving for one year.

Sergeant Steve Waft, of Nottinghamshire Police's Roads Policing Unit, said: "This was a serious incident that in other circumstances could have caused very serious injuries to other people.

"To his credit, Krasnik quickly took responsibility for what happened, admitted he was at fault and apologised for what happened.

"I am pleased that his case has now been resolved and hope it serves as a reminder to other professional drivers about the dangers of driving whilst tired.

"As I have seen several times during my career, nodding off even for a few seconds can have catastrophic consequences."
