A major development for a new leisure building, bowling alley and 28 one-bedroom flats in and around Belvoir Road in Coalville, has finally been given the green light.

An application for the scheme was made by Gylo Property Unit Trust Ltd and Holland Park Leisure more than two years ago - and was passed by North West Leicestershire District Council last November when iit was resolved to grant planning permission subject to the completion of a S106 legal agreement.

That has taken until now to be prepared, signed and sealed - only when that was done could the council issue the decision.

The legal agreement will be made public next week.

The development follows the official opening of the new Marlborough Square events area - with the latest scheme designed to complement it.

The apartments will see a run-down section of the Square converted and brought up to date as part of the regeneration of the area.

A leisure facility with a bowling alley will also see alterations to the Emporium nightclub on Belvoir Road.

The application reads: "Construction of 28 one-bedroom residential apartments with associated communal areas, parking and bin storage.

"Construction of leisure building to include a bowling alley, restaurant with second-floor terrace area, mini golf and gaming areas.

"Partdemolition of 75-81 Belvoir Road and change of use for retail including associated external alterations and parking, demolition of 83 Belvoir Road, alterations to Emporium nightclub including part demolition to the rear, together with new access onto Belvoir Road and creation of associated public amenity areas at Land Off Belvoir Road Coalville Leicestershire LE67 3PD."

In November, Cllr Richard Blunt, Leader of North West Leicestershire District Council, said: "The regeneration of Coalville cannot be achieved by the public sector alone, so this proposal by Gylo will further enhance what the town has to offer.

"This mixed development has something for everyone, supporting the work to make Coalville a family-friendly town.

"I look forward to seeing it take shape, along with other aspirations featured in the Coalville Regeneration Framework."

On behalf of Gylo, Nick Harcus said last year: "Vibrant town centres rely on a combination of uses to attract visitors and inject spending power both during the day and at night.

"In partnership with Holland Park Leisure, we believe that we have identified a creative approach combining new leisure, food and beverage outlets and much-needed new homes.

"After years of inactivity prior to our ownership, this is yet another stage in our revitalisation of the Belvoir Shopping Centre following the multi-million pound spend to date on refurbishment, improvements to public spaces and the new Iceland unit due to open prior to Christmas.

"Now we have received the unanimous support of North West Leicestershire District Council we will get to work on delivering this further new investment in the heart of Coalville."
