A Coalville councillor has written to the Metropolitan Police complaining about Swastikas being displayed on marches.

Cllr Michael Wyatt also says he has seen evidence of the symbol of Nazi Germany being displayed as graffiti in Coalville - and wants it stopped.

The issue reared its head at the weekend when a Met Police officer was reported to have told a Jewish woman that swastikas "need to be taken in context" at a pro-Palestine rally.

In footage from Saturday's Stop the Genocide in Gaza March, a counter-protester confronted officers citing concerns that a person carrying a swastika banner had not been arrested.

After a heated discussion where the officer was said to have admitted to not having "in-depth knowledge" about signs and symbols, the woman was asked to alert an officer elsewhere to the prevalence of the symbol.

Now Liberal-Democrat councillor Wyatt has added his voice to the matter.

He said: "I've complained to the Metropolitan Police about the issue of allowing Swastikas to be displayed on marches.

"It's totally unacceptable and should be banned. It's deeply offensive and it's heightening tensions between communities.

"Only recently I've seen Swastikas in Coalville on our pavements and challenged those doing it.

"I will be writing to the Leicestershire Police Commission candidates asking them to support a ban on such offensive graffiti."
