BUSINESSES in Coalville are being encouraged to sign up to three Christmas competitions ahead of the festive season.

North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) is offering shop owners in the town the opportunity to get involved - and encourage the community and visitors to explore and support local shops and businesses this Christmas.

Last year saw YMCA crowned as winner of the Chairman's Choice Award for best dressed window - and The Attic as the winner of the public vote.

Here are this year's competitions:

Best Dressed Window

Dress your shop window in a winter, festive theme to be in with a chance of winning the coveted public vote or Chairman's choice award.

This is a chance to show off your creative flair, entice shoppers to your store and receive a trophy to be displayed all year round.

Coalville Illuminations

Shops and businesses can decorate shop windows with lighting or 'light' themed displays to spread festive cheer along the High Street and in the town centre - with a chance of winning the public vote.

The council says it understands times are tough so it is up to you how you do it - it adds that, in this case, bigger does not necessarily mean better.

All windows need to be ready by Saturday, November 23.

Where's the elf?

Become part of the hunt to find elves dotted in different shops in the town centre for families to come and find. Shoppers will automatically be entered into a prize draw to win shop local vouchers.

Inspired by The Elf on the Shelf, shops and businesses can opt to display an elf in shop windows for shoppers to find - the council will supply the elf.

Businesses can take part by emailing their interest to [email protected] by Wednesday,13 November.

Local business owners can also come along to this year's Christmas in Coalville event on Saturday, November 23. To request a stall, email [email protected] by Monday, October 28.

Councillor Tony Gillard, Portfolio Holder for Business at NWLDC, said: "We're thrilled to bring back our Christmas competitions, inviting local businesses to join in the festive fun and encouraging visitors to come to Coalville and visit our wide range of shops and businesses.

"Last year's decorations were fantastic, with shop owners embracing the holiday spirit and showcasing their creativity.

"With the return of the best-dressed window contest and Coalville Illuminations, the town will once again be transformed into a vibrant, festive destination for shoppers to enjoy."
