NORTH West Leicestershire District Council is to fly both the England and Scotland flags in Coalville during the European Championships.

Tuesday's full council meeting heard Cllr Michael Wyatt's suggestion that the flag of St George should be on show at Stenson House when Gareth Southgate's side are playing.

However, Labour group leader, Cllr Sean Sheahan, said that the Scottish Saltire should not be ignored.

This was also given a nod of approval from the Glasgow-born chairman of the council, Cllr Kenny Horn.

Council leader, Cllr Richard Blunt, said: "Cllr Wyatt suggested we fly the flag of St George to support England, but Cllr Sheahan - and Kenny, as a Scotsman - said we should fly the Saltire when Scotland are playing.

"I won't try and agree on the detail of that arrangement tonight.

"But I will say I recommend the Chief Executive, in consultation with the three group leaders, agrees a protocol for when we fly the Scottish flag.

"Who knows, they might both be in the final at the end with the flags flying separately."

Cllr Wyatt's Liberal-Democrat Facebook page stated: "Cllr Michael Wyatt put a request into the council to fly the St George's flag to support the England Team in the Euros.

"The council have agreed and the flag will be flying from Stenson House. The Scottish flag will also be flown when they play their matches."
