Poundstretcher has made an unexpected U-turn and decided not to close the company's Coalville store.

Just two days ago (Mon) the discount retailer confirmed that the Whitwick Retail Park outlet was scheduled to shut permanently on Wednesday, 23 September.

But today, when contacted by Coalville Nub News, a spokesman said: "I can confirm that the Coalville store is now going to remain open."

Manager Carole Hickin, who works with a team of around 12 staff, was told the good news in an email this morning.

She said: "We are all very relieved and very happy to be staying open.

"We hope customers will continue to support us."

Poundstretcher is closing around 250 of its 450 UK stores - with the loss of around 2,000 jobs.

The discount chain has said that declining margins over a sustained period, exacerbated by the impact of coronavirus, have taken a heavy toll on its balance sheet.

Earlier this year the company drafted in KPMG to review the business which provided measures such as closing unprofitable stores.
