Police say they are investigating the 'violent disorder' surrounding Coalville Town's play-off final in Peterborough on Bank Holiday Monday.

The trouble left one officer injured - and a dispersal order was put in place which was in operation for around five hours after the game.

The Ravens travelled to Peterborough Sports for the Southern League Premier Division Central decider to see who would win promotion to the National League North.

Coalville lost 2-0, but the occasion was marred by crowd trouble which required police action.

The start of the second-half was delayed for 30 minutes after a disturbance in the 1,900-strong crowd, which attracted a large contingent travelling from Coalville.

Police say that fans from both sides contributed to the problems - but no arrests were made.

Peterborough Today reported that police had to intervene as supporters clashed during the half-time interval - and there were several ejections from the ground.

Beer appeared to be thrown and flares were let off.

Before the game it is understood some people scaled a fence to get into the ground for free.

After a discussion between the police and the match officials the players were sent back to the dressing room to allow the fans to calm down.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Constabulary told Coalville Nub News: "We were called on Monday with reports of disorder at Peterborough Football Club on Lincoln Road, involving approximately 30 football fans supporting both teams due to play later that day.

"Officers attended, with one officer being injured as a result, though they are not thought to have suffered serious injuries.

"A dispersal order was put in place until 10pm that evening, allowing Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) and police officers to direct a person to leave the area within the order if they have reasonable grounds to suspect that their behaviour has caused, or is likely to cause, harassment, alarm or distress to members of the public.

"Failure to comply with the order can result in arrest.

"No arrests were made but an investigation into the violent disorder has been raised.

"Anyone with any information is urged to contact police via their webchat service quoting crime reference 35/30584/22.

"Anyone without internet access should call 101. Always dial 999 in an emergency."

Only after an appeal by Sports manager Jimmy Dean did the game re-start.

Dean told Peterborough Today: "It was a few idiots from Leicester and a few Peterborough idiots - we can't get away from that - misbehaving.

"They ain't worth two bob. We don't want any part of that at this club and great work by the police for getting them out of the ground."
