Acclaimed playwright Ben Weatherill, whose last production featured the legendary Sir Ian McKellen, is returning to his roots with an exciting new initiative to celebrate and support theatre in Coalville.

Partnering with his former teacher, Julie Norley, Weatherill is calling on local theatre lovers, drama groups, and venues to come together and help shape a brand-new theatre festival set for 2026.

Weatherill, a rising star in British theatre, has gained national recognition for his ability to craft compelling, thought-provoking stories.

His previous work has graced prestigious stages, and his collaboration with McKellen further cemented his status as a playwright to watch.

However, despite his growing success, Weatherill remains deeply connected to Coalville, a place that played a crucial role in his artistic journey.

Now, alongside Julie Norley - an educator who inspired him early in his career - Weatherill is turning his attention to his hometown.

Together, they are inviting the community to be part of an exciting movement to create a theatre festival that will showcase local talent and highlight Coalville's cultural venues.

The duo is hosting an open session on March 31st at 6.30pm at Coalville CAN, in Memorial Square, where they hope to gather ideas and bring people together from local theatre enthusiasts, performers, schools and venue representatives - this could be pubs, shopping centres or car parks.

Not just traditional venues, but anyone passionate about the arts.

Whether you are involved in a drama, theatre, or singing group, or simply want to see more opportunities in Coalville, this is your chance to get involved.

Organisers say this initiative marks a thrilling moment for Coalville's arts scene.

With Weatherill and Norley supporting the coming together of local talent and venues, the 2026 Theatre Festival promises to be an event to remember.
