A scheme to demolish a children's nursery in Hugglescote and replace it with a similar facility and five new apartments, have gone before North West Leicestershire District Council planners.

The application is for permission to demolish the existing building at Forest Road.

In its place would be a new children's nursery, with five residential apartments, together with associated parking, landscaping, bin and cycle store.

The applicant is Dr Tariq Gauhar from Thornton, and an outline of the scheme has been submitted to the district council.

Formerly a doctor's surgery, the building is now occupied by The Den.

A design and access statement says the project, when completed would creation of a new, high quality, mixed use development which makes better use of the site.

It would include a purpose-built, modern nursery with a "fresh and distinctive appearance".

The document also says the development would enhance townscape visually and also says it would contain "quality living accommodation that respects the setting, meets local needs and will be a welcome addition to the housing stock."

It adds: "Each flat comprises an open-plan living-dining–kitchen space, bathroom, storage space and bedrooms.

"Amenity space has been provided in the form of both recessed and projecting balconies to the front facade.

"The Den, is a family run nursery that follows a holistic approach and ethos of anchoring the nature around us to create a unique and safe environment, where children are given a head start to learn, play and develop.

"Demand for a nursery in this location is already established given the existing operation, and with significant residential developments coming forward in the local area, this is only likely to increase."

Coalville planners will now assess the project before making a final decision.
