Work on Hermitage Ecopark in Whitwick to start this autumn
Work to create an eco-park at Hermitage Recreation Ground is set to begin this autumn, North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) has announced.
The scheme, details of which were released in April, will include an outdoor activity trail and a 'tiny forest.'
Having been given the go ahead by councillors last week, the project is designed to create a visitor destination whilst increasing biodiversity.
The project will see 3,500 trees planted in partnership with Earthwatch UK.
Information boards, balancing logs, five new footpaths and an assault course will be built
This as well as a footbridge between Whitwick and Coalville Leisure Centre and Hermitage Recreation Ground.
Cllr Michael Wyatt, portfolio holder for community, said: "Our vision is to create a biodiverse area that would serve as an attractive visitor destination for families.
"The local community is at the heart of these plans and it's great to hear that our proposals reflect their idea of what an eco-park looks like.
"With their backing and the green light from cabinet, we can start thinking about the next steps and getting started on site which is likely to be in the autumn."
Locals were asked to share their views on the scheme in April and May.
NWLDC said more than 70 per cent of respondents agreed or strongly agreed the plans:
- Reflect their idea of an eco-park
- Will encourage people to visit the eco-park
- Support the health and wellbeing of residents.
NWLDC has secured £282,000 to fund the project and is working in partnership with Leicestershire County Council, Everyone Active, The National Forest and Earthwatch UK.
The project has received £130,000 from the UK Government through the UK Share Prosperity Fund.
