North West Leicestershire Improving Its Record After Being Named As One Of UK's Top 10 'Stink Spots'

By Graham Hill 19th Jul 2020

North West Leicestershire is improving its unwanted record as one of the country's top 10 smelliest places.

A new 'stink map' has been put together by Rich Quelch of e-liquid, home and personal fragrance, and body and skincare distributors Lifestyle Packaging.

And it shows North West Leicestershire to have been fifth highest area in England in terms of complaints about bad smells with 954.

Those statistics have been collated over five years 2015 - but a breakdown of the figures shows a big improvement in the area.

They show that 2016 was a true 'annus horribilis' for the region with a huge 715 complaints about bad smells.

The previous year, 2015, produced 137 moans. But 2017 (57) and 2018 (40) saw a big drop.

And last year there were just FIVE complaints about bad whiffs in the district.

Quite why the figures exploded in 2016 is not explained - but it has sent North West Leicestershire into fifth in the table behind the Cotswolds, Bassetlaw, City of London and Westminster.

Chichester (904), Ashford in Kent (846), North Norfolk (794), Teignbridge (775), and Swansea (707),complete the top 10.

But the description of the complaints made in this region are labelled as 'general' with no one unusual complaint being highlighted.

Mr Quelch made Freedom of Information requests to find out about the figures from each council authority said: "It's really interesting to see where residents complain the most about bad smells and the range of complaints councils receive every year.

"From "children being sick on a school bus" in Norfolk, a "strong smell of cabbage" in West Dunbartonshire, to a "neighbour's pizza oven" in Sutton, the list of unusual smell complaints is endless".

In five years, UK councils received a staggering 116,789 nuisance smell complaints which is one for every 500 people.

Local authorities often send out human "sniffers" to assess smell complaints and ask residents to keep "smell diaries".
