North West Leicestershire District Council says it wants to 'set the record straight' about Newmarket in Marlborough Square.

The venue was opened by the council in September, 2021, and, since then it has had mixed reviews from locals.

But the district council maintains footfall is increasing and that it will not come into its own until the redevelopment of Marlborough Square is completed.

However, the council posted on its Facebook page yesterday (Thursday) that it wanted to respond to unspecified comments about the building.

The post reads: "We've heard some things said about Newmarket recently and would like to set the record straight and give our point of view.

"We are very proud of Newmarket and what it brings to Coalville.

"It is a unique place that supports businesses, groups and individuals.

"When we set out on this journey, we knew it was going to be different and that it wouldn't suit everyone.

"But we are very confident that Newmarket is what we set out for it to be - a community space for people to meet, shop, eat and drink.

"We understand that some people may not agree with the Newmarket approach, but we know that it makes a difference to people's lives - whether they are businesses or customers - every single week, and we're really proud of that."

The post adds that the venue has thrown its doors open to local traders.

It adds: "Since the opening in September 2021, we have supported and welcomed applications from all types of traders, including a fruit and veg trader.

"There is no policy that restricts traders from selling certain items, except for smoking and vaping items as it doesn't fit in with our health and wellbeing promotion.

"When taking on new traders, we'll also try to avoid duplicated items which could impact the trade of other local businesses within the market.

"We're really grateful for the support we've received since it opened, and given the current economic crisis which is impacting trade across the country, we ask that you continue to support our local traders in any way that you can.

"Anyone interested in joining Newmarket can get in touch with us to discuss the opportunities we have available, including our 50 per cent off casual trader offer for January and February.

"Call us on 01530 454773 or email us at [email protected]."
