Plans for a new industrial building in Coalville have been given the go-ahead - despite strong objections from the local Parish Council.

Motability Operations Ltd, based in Brindley Road on the Stephenson Industrial Estate, has been given planning permission for a 'single employment building, gatehouse/security building with ancillary car storage, landscaping, drainage and provision of new access'.

The company supports people with disabilities by leasing cars, wheelchair accessible vehicles, scooters and powered wheelchairs to such customers.

A North West Leicestershire District Council's officer's report says that the planning application represents Motability Operations' need for a state-of-the-art vehicle reconditioning centre for vehicles returned by customers at the end of the lease period.

But the site for the building backs on to residential properties on Ashby Road in Coalville.

The area comes under Swannington Parish Council which has voiced its opposition to the plans.

It said: "The application is over-dominant and obtrusive.

"The close proximity of the development would create excessive noise, and light pollution, effectively 'moving' their homes on to an industrial estate.

"There are more suitable brownfield sites for such a development.

"Concerns are raised about the increased levels of traffic, in particular that travelling through Swannington."

The Parish Council reiterated its objections from a previous meeting and raised further concerns as it appears the hardstanding area has increased in size to 25metres, meaning it is likely to have more possibilities for use as an industrial area.

But the district council has given the green light and said: "The site was previously owned by Fleet Auction Group who were located within the Stephenson Way Industrial Estate.

"Motability Operations Limited have acquired the Fleet Auction Group premises and the application site in order to facilitate their on-going operational needs.

"Motability supports people with disabilities to achieve greater independence by giving them access to accordance and worry-free mobility through the Motability Scheme.

"It leases cars, wheelchair accessible vehicles, scooters and powered wheelchairs to over 650,000 disabled customers across the UK.

"Motability is responsible for the strategic direction and oversight of the Motability Scheme."
