Memorial Square poppy display will feature as Remembrance Sunday commemorations return to Coalville

By Graham Hill 3rd Nov 2021

Poppy petals will be released from the top of the War Memorial in Coalville as Remembrance Day commemorations return to the town this year.

North West Leicestershire District Council and the Royal British Legion, which recently reached the 100 year milestone, are working together on events that allow residents in Coalville to pay their respects safely.

While Coalville will be able to remember those that sacrificed their lives with a physical event this year, measures will remain in place to reduce the risks of COVID-19.

This will include reduced attendee lists and outdoor services to encourage spacing between visitors.

A Facebook Live stream will also be available for those that feel safer watching the event from home.

The Coalville parade leaves Christ Church at 10.35am passing along Hotel Street and High Street, culminating in a wreath laying ceremony at the War Memorial in Memorial Square, which is where the parade will end.

During the two minutes silence, poppy petals will be released from the top of the War Memorial.

An Armistice Day Service at the War Memorial in Coalville will also take place on Thursday, November 11, at 10.55am.

To help raise awareness of the Poppy Appeal this year, the council has installed 20 Pavement Poppies across the district at a number of war memorials and village locations as part of town and parish councils, local businesses and remembrance partnerships.

Councillor Virge Richichi, Chairman of the district council, said: "Remembrance Day is a chance to reflect and remember those we have lost, and to show our gratitude to those that are serving in conflicts around the world.

"Many of you will want to support the return of a physical event this year, and we'll be encouraging attendees to remember those fallen safely by keeping their distance and only attending if they feel well enough to do so.

"Anyone with symptoms or who simply feels safer at home, can watch the event by tuning into a live Facebook stream on the day."

A number of other parades and services are to be held in North West Leicestershire over the weekend with information available from parish councils or local churches.
