Drivers of electric cars can now take advantage of four new charging points in Coalville.

The spaces in the town's Margaret Street car park are the latest points installed by North West Leicestershire District Council as part of its Zero Carbon Roadmap.

The installation has been part-funded by a £26,000 grant from the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV), with support from the Energy Saving Trust (EST).

The new charging points join these ones following already introduced by the council across the district at:

  • Vicarage Street, Whitwick
  • The Green, Thringstone
  • Clapgun Street, Castle Donington
  • North Street, Ashby-de-la-Zouch

The District Council is looking at the potential to install electric vehicle charging points in Measham and the council office car park in Coalville.

Additional charging points are also being installed at the council's new Whitwick and Coalville Leisure centre, due to open in 2022 off the A511 Stephenson Way.

Councillor Andrew Woodman, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: "Our ambitious Zero Carbon targets are supporting us to make greener choices for the district and hopefully encouraging others to look at making their own changes to reduce emissions.

"Introducing a growing network of charging points across the district will help us to fuel the demand for electric cars locally, in turn leading to more charging points and greener roads.

"Thank you to OZEV for part-funding the project and continuing to support us on our Zero Carbon journey."
