A housing development in Hugglescote has become the ideal place to call home for a mother and daughter after the passing of her father last year.

Julie Tubby, from Ellistown and her mum Bernice Martin, are now living across the street from each other having previously been 200 miles apart in North West Leicestershire and Kent respectively.

During his illness, it had been the wish of Julie's dad, David, that mum Bernice move closer so that she wasn't alone.

The family had recently visited granddaughter Nicole's new home, built by Cadeby Homes at another site in the village and - as a retired builder himself - David had been impressed with what he saw.

Julie explained, "It was Dad's wish that mum should live in a Cadeby home and be closer to family.

"As a builder by trade, he was incredibly impressed with the workmanship and felt at ease knowing that mum would be safe and secure in her later years with one of her own.

"So, despite the pandemic being in full force I set about doing everything I could to make that wish come true."

Not really having any specific plans to move herself, Julie and her husband Matthew, 56 and son Ryan, 18 decided they too, should buy a home at the development, Grange Meadows.

Bernice and Julie are now living in the same style of house, the York, a four-bedroom detached property, just a few yards from each other.

"Mum lived in an older property in a very rural location, miles away from the rest of the family," continued Julie.

"Now we can literally wave to each other from our front doors.

"We all feel so much better knowing that she is close should she need anything."

Julie and Matthew used Cadeby Homes' Part Exchange scheme, making their move to Grange Meadows even easier after the sale of their previous property fell through.

A brand new home has meant a blank canvas for the Tubbys to make their own and for Bernice, a low maintenance, new life closer to her daughter, grandchildren and great grandchild.

Due to the Government restrictions at the time, it was was not always possible for Bernice to come and see the development for herself before the move - so Julie managed the whole process for her mother via phone calls and FaceTime.

She added: "Luckily mum and I have similar tastes so I was able make most of the kitchen, bathroom and flooring choices quite easily with her over the phone.

"And even though we have the same property style, the finished results are still unique to each of us.

"In fact, both properties are simply stunning. As a family we had such high expectations, given the circumstances and it would have been easy for even the smallest thing to have made the experience more challenging, let alone a global pandemic, but the reality was far from it.

"Everyone at Cadeby has been fantastic throughout, supporting us every step of the way.

"We are all so very happy with our new homes, we love being so close and we know that dad would be delighted to see how it's all come together just as he'd hoped."

  • Grange Meadows is a bespoke collection of 49 two, three and four bedroom homes. Prices start from £199,995. For more information, click www.cadebyhomes.co.uk.
