Night time work on the new Marlborough Square development is starting this week.

The £2.8million North West Leicestershire District Council project is due to be completed this Spring - after experiencing a number of delays.

But from tonight (Thursday) work will be stepped up to make sure it is finished on time.

A spokesperson for the District Council said: "Our contractors will start to work during the night to prepare the pathways that will run alongside Metro Stores, Thawa, Newmarket, Subway, Domino's, Subway and Betfred.

"The kerbs and paving have started to arrive and will be delivered over the next few weeks.

"Drainage and ducting for the electrical services has progressed ready for paving to start in the next couple of weeks."

Councillor Richard Blunt, Leader of the district council, said last year: "The redesign of Marlborough Square is a really high-profile project that, together with council investment in key buildings around the square, will make a huge difference to the area once it's complete.

"The project has suffered various delays, and we thank the public for their patience while we remained committed to it.

"It's often tricky to get public space projects up and running, but I'm looking forward to seeing the square change, become more people-friendly and start to host regular markets and events."
