A Whitwick woman who has been a lollipop crossing lady in the village for 50 years is to be honoured next week.
Sandy 'Fred' Flamson is to become the third Honorary Freeman of the Parish of Whitwick in recognition of her outstanding service.
Whitwick Parish Council's website says that Sandy is known universally as 'Fred' to villagers old and young, and adds 'this is a special award that she is delighted to receive.'
The honour will be conferred at a Special Meeting of the Parish Council to be held at 7pm on Thursday (January 12) and the certificate will be awarded during this meeting which is open to the public - other business will not be taking place.
Invited guests will then be welcome to remain for a small reception at Park Hall in Whitwick Park.
The reception will also recognise the award made 'virtually' to Councillor Ray Woodward during the pandemic when his reception could not take place.
Parish Councillors wanted to do something to recognise the many years given in service to the children and families in our community and the great contribution she has shown in keeping children safe when needing to get to and from school.
Councillor Sue Colledge, Chair of Whitwick Parish Council said: "Although it's only an honorary title, granting 'Fred' the Freedom of the Parish is the highest honour we can bestow and this honour is greatly deserved".
