Hugglescote Mum Says Thanks For Support After Spitfire Drawing Raises Money For Community Support Group
A Hugglescote mum has thanked villagers for supporting her family's VE Day-inspired fundraiser in aid of the local coronavirus community support group.
Kath Spencer drew the outline of a Spitfire on the pavement outside her Millpond home and invited passers-by taking their daily Government-approved exercise on Friday (8 May) to fill it in with coins.
Thanks to a fantastic turnout the fundraising venture raised £98.76 for Hugglescote, Donington le Heath and Coalville Community Response Unit.
And, after the event, someone slipped a £10 note through Kath's letterbox to add to the donations - bringing the total to £108.76.
Kath came up with the novel idea of combining the 75th anniversary of VE Day with boosting the community response unit's coffers because she can't offer the volunteer group practical help.
She suffers from a rare genetic condition and is currently shielding.
Kath told Coalville Nub News: "I am really grateful to everyone who added their coins and I know the money will be put to good use supporting the elderly and vulnerable.
"The community response unit works tirelessly to provide a much-needed and valuable service at this difficult time."
Kath's children, 15-year-old Sam and 12-year-old Ysobel, supported their mum's fundraising venture by giving away toys and husband Tony helped decorate the front garden with patriotic bunting and balloon arch.
