Coalville Town's 'Wembley' Relay Event Closes In On Fundraising Goal As Club Marks FA Vase Final Appearance
More than 130 fans took part in a fundraising relay around Coalville Town's football pitch at the weekend - and netted almost £1,900 for the club's coffers.
The event was organised by The Ravens' youth team secretary Wayne McDermott to commemorate the ninth anniversary of the club's Wembley FA Vase Final against Whitley Bay and help keep players united during the coronavirus lockdown.
Wayne worked out the distance from the club's Owen Street Mander Cruickshank Stadium to Wembley at 103 miles and converted the distance to a walking time of 34 hours Coalville Town fans ready to 'walk to Wembley'
Then he invited the club's teams and the wider community to join the fundraising venture staged on Friday and Saturday (8 and 9 May).
Wayne told Coalville Nub News: "I am extremely pleased with the take up for the event and the amount raised.
"The generosity of donations has been amazing and we are fast closing in on the £2,000 target we set, with more than £1,000 raised in just 24 hours.
"More than 130 people - individuals and family groups - joined the relay and by the end of Friday we had already walked the 103 miles to Wembley.
"By the time we finished on Saturday we had completed the journey home again.
"It was very much a family event which was great to see and gave our youth players something to focus on.
"Next year, when we can really celebrate, we will make this a family event where we can mix and enjoy each other's company."
Wayne's 16-year-old daughter Neve organised the relay schedule and thanks to her efforts the event - adhering to Government social distancing guidelines - ran like clockwork.
