A county council proposal to expand a Coalville roundabout would require the demolition of up to four homes if the work is given the go-ahead.

Leicestershire County Council has started an online consultation this week for the public to give their views on its proposal to expand a roundabout in Bardon Road/A511, in Coalville.

A new exit would be added to the roundabout, creating a new road heading south to connect Bardon Road with the new housing developments around Grange Road.

However, up to four of the homes which currently line the southern side of the roundabout would need to be bought by the council and demolished to make way for the new road.

All four houses are currently occupied. Leicestershire County Council has said the residents have been informed of the plans.

The council says the benefits of the scheme include relieving traffic congestion on the A511, which the council has said is also likely to improve air quality in the area.

It would also create a better transport link between Coalville town centre and the new housing estate, as well as improving connections to the M1 and the A42, according to the proposal.

The scheme is part of a wider effort to improve the A511 in Leicestershire. The A511 Growth Corridor scheme would see work carried out at nine locations on the road between the A42 Junction 13 at Ashby and the Field Head roundabout near junction 22 of the M1.

This would include expanding a section of Stephenson Way to make it a dual carriageway and work to six other roundabouts along the A511.
