Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service attended an incident on Wednesday morning in which a car ended up on its side due to the icy conditions.

The incident happened on Swannymote Road in Whitwick and showed how treacherous the roads are early in the morning at the moment.

The Fire Service posted a photo of the vehicle on social media - along with advice on how to take care when driving on roads affected by black ice.

The post reads: "This morning we attended an accident on Swannymote Road in Whitwick, where a car had lost control due to black ice.

"Driving in icy conditions can be dangerous.

"Here are a few tips to help keep you safe:

1. Slow Down – Reduce your speed and leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle in front.

2. Gentle Movements – Brake, accelerate, and steer smoothly to avoid skidding.

3. Check Your Tires – Ensure they have good tread and are properly inflated.

4. Clear Visibility – Fully defrost windows and clear all ice/snow before driving.

5. Plan Ahead – Allow extra time for your journey and stick to main roads, which are more likely to be gritted."
