A Coalville woodland area is to host the National Forest's 30th Birthday Walk this month.

This 11-mile circular walk, on Thursday May 22, will take you through 10 native woodlands planted in the National Forest's early years.

Starting at Sence Valley Forest Park (LE67 6NW), the walk will pass through wildlife reserves, farmland, and villages, with a lunch stop at the historic 1620s Manor House in Donington le Heath.

The walk is described as challenging, with six stiles and an estimated six-hour duration.

This special walk is a chance to celebrate the journey of the National Forest, which began 30 years ago with a bold vision to transform a landscape scarred by mining and industry into a thriving natural haven.

Thanks to early supporters, today the Forest boasts over 25 per cent tree cover, compared to just six per cent at the start.

Zoe Sewter, volunteer and wellbeing officer at the National Forest, said: "The Walking Festival celebrates the Forest's commitment to community, regeneration, and the belief that nature and people can thrive together.

"This 30th anniversary walk is a powerful reminder of how far we've come."

Booking is essential by contacting Zoe Sewter at 07976 865451 or emailing [email protected].

As well as that, the National Forest is marking National Walking Month.

Now in its 16th year, the festival offers walks for all ages, abilities, and interests.

From short, accessible trails to more challenging countryside treks, the programme includes themed walks focusing on wildlife, history, geology, and wellbeing.

This year, as the National Forest celebrates 30 years of transformation, the festival invites you to explore the forest one footpath at a time.

The festival runs across Leicestershire, Derbyshire, and Staffordshire, featuring a range of walks for all levels—from gentle strolls to more strenuous hikes. It's an opportunity to explore the landscape that has been reimagined over the past three decades, now home to over 9.8 million trees and a rich variety of wildlife.

The Walking Festival includes:

  • Gentle strolls under 3 miles for families, beginners, and those with limited mobility
  • Sensory walks that engage all five senses
  • Educational nature walks for curious minds
  • Energetic hikes through iconic locations like Calke Abbey and Beacon Hill

Each walk is led by passionate local volunteers, whose knowledge and enthusiasm bring the Forest's stories to life.
