A car was set on fire 'deliberately' in Ellistown in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

A VW Golf was discovered ablaze shortly after 2.20am in Beveridge Lane.

Police and a fire crew from Coalville were called to the incident, but the fire was reportedly put out by a member of the public.

It was confirmed that nobody was in the vehicle at the time, but an arson investigation by police is ongoing.

A Leicestershire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "On arrival, the Incident Commander confirmed a VW Golf was involved in the fire which was extinguished by a passer-by before the arrival of the fire engine.

"Police were informed as it was believed to be a deliberate ignition by persons unknown.
