Work is due to resume on the £2.7million Marlborough Square scheme in Coalville in the new year.

The long-awaited town centre development finally got under way in September and is scheduled to be completed in the Spring.

Work was paused last Friday for the Christmas break.

North West Leicestershire District Council says that it will start again on Monday, January 8.

A council spokesperson said: "Last week, some of the concrete slab was poured.

"This will be the base for the paving.

"More concrete will be poured in January, after more ground preparation.

"Businesses around the square are open as usual - please support them over the festive period."

After a number of setbacks and complications work finally got under way to turn a car park and cut-through road into a pedestrianised public square that will be used for outdoor markets and other events.

The redesign has been planned since 2018 as part of what the council say is its commitment to help Coalville be a 'vibrant and family-friendly town'.

The project promises to rejuvenate the area, with an outdoor market to complement the indoor market at Newmarket and other events throughout the year.
